In the last week, there was a troubling incident that occurred at the Saguaro National Park in Tucson, Arizona. Several animals on the park grounds have been displaying erratic and bizarre behavior, signaling something may be amiss. The park officials believe that this could be attributed to one of the most commonly known animal diseases – rabies.
The animals that have been reported to be behaving out of the ordinary are foxes, raccoons, and even a bobcat. The unusual behavior of these animals has caused alarm and prompted officials to issue a warning to visitors who frequent the park. In a news release issued by the Saguaro National Park on Jan. 23, the park officials further alert visitors to be mindful of their surroundings and take necessary precautions to avoid contracting the potentially deadly disease.
This incident follows closely on the heel of another reported case that occurred on Sunday, Jan. 21, in the eastern section of the Saguaro National Park, where a 66-year-old was attacked by a bobcat. The victim reported being bitten and scratched and was subsequently hospitalized for treatment of injuries. The bobcat, which is suspected to have rabies, is still at large within the park grounds and poses a risk of infecting others.

The National Park Service has identified rabies as a viral infection that is transmissible among animals and humans alike. When an animal is infected with it, it gradually loses its fear of humans and adopts a sleepy, disoriented, or aggressive behavior. Additionally, the animal may drool excessively, have trouble moving around, appear paralyzed, or bite the air, as reported by officials. Some animals may not even exhibit any signs of the disease, making it difficult to know whether they are carriers or not.
In light of this, park officials are encouraging visitors to maintain a safe distance from wildlife, and promptly report any sick-looking animals to rangers or wildlife officials. They also advise taking precautionary measures such as blocking small openings in homes, cabins, and tents, to prevent animals from getting into contact with them. Parents and guardians are also advised to teach their children about the dangers of rabies and how to stay safe.

Rabies is a disease that can have dire consequences if not treated promptly. If one is bitten by an animal in the park, it is recommended to seek immediate medical attention. Delays in getting the necessary treatment can have fatal consequences, hence the need for immediate action. It is further advised to take preventative measures, such as getting vaccinated for rabies if one plans to visit a national park where there is a higher risk of coming into contact with wildlife.
The unpredictable and strange behavior of animals within the park grounds is a worrying development that requires attention. While the presence of the rabies virus is currently suspected, no conclusive tests have been conducted yet. However, the park officials are taking every precautionary measure to ensure that visitors are safe while enjoying the park’s many attractions.
