Country music star Chris Young was arrested Monday evening in Nashville and charged with assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. The arrest came after an altercation between Young and a Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) officer, but new surveillance footage of the incident has raised doubts about the officer’s claims.
Young’s legal team has called for the charges to be dropped after the footage emerged, which they claim contradicts the version of events described by the authorities. According to legal experts, the video could potentially “undermine” the TABC officer’s recollection of events. The video, if authenticated and admitted into evidence, could be “very powerful” to a jury as it allows them to make their own determination of the witnesses’ credibility.
However, the video also has its limitations. It only shows a portion of the altercation and does not provide context for what happened before or after. Despite this, former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani believes that the prevalence of surveillance footage and cellphone cameras has changed the game, making it easier to hold both people and authorities accountable in a court of law.

The affidavit filed by the TABC officer states that Young “struck” him on the shoulder, which led to the officer pushing the singer and other bar patrons becoming involved. However, the video allegedly only shows Young reaching out to stop the officer from passing. A spokesperson for the TABC declined to comment on the situation, stating that the matter is currently pending in court.

Defense attorney Duncan Levin, who previously represented Harvey Weinstein, believes that surveillance footage plays a crucial role in resolving cases like Chris Young’s. The video in question raises “legitimate questions” about the accuracy of the arrest affidavit, and Levin believes that both sides should want the truth to come out.
The impact of surveillance and cellphone videos on criminal trials has become increasingly significant, according to Levin. These videos can capture details that might be overlooked or misrepresented in written reports, and they can also corroborate or contradict eyewitness testimonies.
Chris Young rose to fame after winning the singing competition “Nashville Star” in 2006. He has released eight studio albums and achieved multiple number-one hits on the Billboard charts. Young’s most recent album, “Famous Friends,” was released in 2021, and another album, “Young Love & Saturday Nights,” is set to be released in March 2022.
