Attorney General Pam Bondi is facing a storm of criticism from conservatives after she appeared to endorse prosecuting Americans for so-called “hate speech.”
The controversy began when Bondi joined “The Katie Miller Podcast,” hosted by the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. During the conversation, Bondi said cracking down on “hate speech” has become more urgent following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
“There’s free speech, and then there’s hate speech. And there is no place, especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie, in our society,” Bondi said in a clip released Monday. “We will absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech.”
Those remarks ignited swift backlash online, particularly from conservatives who view the very concept of “hate speech” as a dangerous loophole the Left uses to silence political opponents. Critics pointed out that the category is vague, subjective, and defined more by how a listener reacts than by what is actually said.
Any trust I had in Pam Bondi just went down the toilet. If you don’t have hate speech you don’t have free speech. If you’re on the right, do NOT be tempted to cheer on the surrendering of the first amendment just because now we’re the ones hearing words that we don’t like. https://t.co/iP1MRr90rs

Daily Wire host Matt Walsh was among the most vocal, posting, “Get rid of her. Today. This is insane.” He went further during a Fox News segment, blasting Bondi for even entertaining the idea. Walsh noted that the Justice Department under Bondi was reportedly considering charging Office Depot after an employee allegedly refused to print flyers featuring Charlie Kirk’s face.
“The employee who didn’t print the flyer was already fired by his employer,” Walsh said. “This stuff is being handled successfully through free speech and free markets. This is totally gratuitous and pointless. We need the AG focused on bringing down the left wing terror cells, not prosecuting Office Depot for God’s sake.”
Get rid of her. Today. This is insane. Conservatives have fought for decades for the right to refuse service to anyone. We won that fight. Now Pam Bondi wants to roll it all back for no reason. The employee who didn’t print the flyer was already fired by his employer. This stuff… https://t.co/Ry7PEUz1ca

Facing growing pushback, Bondi issued a clarification on Tuesday. In a written statement, she said her department’s efforts would only apply to speech that crosses into threats of violence.
“Hate speech that crosses the line into threats of violence is NOT protected by the First Amendment. It’s a crime,” Bondi wrote. “For far too long, we’ve watched the radical left normalize threats, call for assassinations, and cheer on political violence. That era is over.”
Still, the clarification has not calmed all concerns. Many argue that even using the phrase “hate speech” hands a rhetorical victory to the Left, which has long pushed for criminal penalties for speech it deems offensive. Conservatives note that once the government begins drawing those lines, political leaders can simply expand the definition whenever convenient.
Tucker UNLEASHES on AG Pam Bondi with a blistering 3-minute rebuttal to her remarks on “hate speech.”
The monologue version of Tucker is back. This is EXACTLY what we need from him right now.

Bondi’s comments come at a time when political speech is already under heightened scrutiny after Kirk’s murder shocked the nation. Prosecutors have said the suspected shooter targeted the conservative activist specifically because of his “political expression.”
The attorney general has made clear she wants to respond forcefully to any threats in the wake of the tragedy. But her framing has sparked fresh debates over free expression, government overreach, and whether even well-intentioned efforts could end up chilling the very freedoms Charlie Kirk spent his career defending.
Speaker Mike Johnson responds to question about AG Bondi’s “hate speech” comments: “In America, it’s a very important part of our tradition that we do not censor and silence disfavored viewpoints. For now, conservatives appear divided: some support Bondi’s aggressive stance against threats, while others worry her words mark the beginning of a dangerous slide toward policing political speech.
