Money Flows for Voter ID
Airbnb co-founder Joseph Gebbia has donated $8 million to the main committee backing Proposition 39 in California. This strict voter ID measure requires voters to show identification at the polls. The donation pushed the committee’s total cash on hand in September from $12.9 million to around $20.9 million, according to the New York Post. The four groups fighting against this measure had just $8.4 million on hand. Gebbia has previously donated to Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. He has also aligned himself with President Donald Trump and taken a role with the Department of Government Efficiency. Other supporters include Nicole Shanahan and the Winklevoss twins.
Opponents Call It a Power Grab
The campaign against the voter ID measure has blasted it as a “MAGA power grab.” New York Post reports that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s 2024 vice presidential candidate status is a key part of this support. The coalition fighting a separate billionaire tax includes Gov. Gavin Newsom and Planned Parenthood. They are also joined by most Republicans. Prominent Democratic figures and party allies are battling a California plan to levy a wealth tax on billionaires. This group has raised more than $300 million in opposition to that measure. Nearly a third of the money came solely from Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
The Wealth Tax Battle
Proposition 40 aims to enact a one-time 5% levy on the assets of Californians possessing more than $1 billion. Federal healthcare funding reductions would be offset using the majority of the generated income. The “yes” side of this billionaire tax measure includes some labor unions. California Rep. Ro Khanna and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also back it. Sanders asked a sharp question about the current economic system. The “yes” side argues the tax is needed to fix healthcare gaps.
Voters in California will soon decide on these two major financial issues. One side wants stricter rules for voting to ensure security. The other side wants to tax the richest people in the state. ABC News noted that the coalition against the billionaire tax includes Gov. Gavin Newsom. They argue the tax proposal is seriously flawed. Bernie Sanders warned that the details of any wealth tax matter greatly. The financial clash is now clear for everyone to see. Joseph Gebbia has put his money behind voter ID while Sergey Brin funds the fight against the tax. The New York Post reported that Nicole Shanahan is a prominent supporter of the pro-voter ID campaign. The Washington Times confirmed that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s 2024 vice presidential candidate status is linked to the effort. The $8 million donation changes the landscape for Proposition 39. The $300 million raised changes the landscape for Proposition 40. Both measures face a critical vote soon.
