According to the Department of Justice, Cherfilus-McCormick, along with her brother Edwin and a handful of others, allegedly hijacked $5 million in FEMA funds — taxpayer money meant for COVID-19 disaster relief — and rerouted it through a maze of accounts to conceal its origin. And surprise, surprise: a “substantial portion” of that cash allegedly ended up boosting her 2021 congressional campaign. The rest? Well, it allegedly went toward some “personal benefits.” Because nothing says “public servant” like funneling disaster relief dollars into your own bank account.

The health-care company run by Cherfilus-McCormick’s family got a FEMA-funded contract during the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2021, the company received a $5 million overpayment — a little whoopsie from Uncle Sam — and instead of reporting it or returning the funds, the indictment says they allegedly chose to pocket the cash, scrub it through a network of straw donors, and watch the political donations roll in.
Yes, really. According to prosecutors, Cherfilus-McCormick and her co-defendants didn’t just take the money and run — they allegedly staged an elaborate donation laundering operation, moving money through friends and relatives, who then made “individual contributions” to her campaign. Because nothing screams integrity like building your political future on taxpayer-funded fraud and fake donors.

And it doesn’t stop there. The DOJ also says she teamed up with her tax preparer — you know, just to complete the trifecta of campaign finance, disaster fraud, and tax evasion. Together, they allegedly filed false federal tax returns, cooking the books by disguising campaign spending and personal luxuries as business deductions. They even threw in some inflated charitable donations for good measure. Can’t forget to sprinkle in a little extra virtue on top of the alleged financial crimes.
Attorney General Pam Bondi didn’t mince words: “Using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment is a particularly selfish, cynical crime.” That’s putting it mildly. This wasn’t just some sloppy misreporting. If the allegations are true, this was a premeditated, coordinated money-laundering scheme using emergency relief funds — funds meant to help people during one of the most chaotic moments in modern history. While Americans were trying to figure out how to get vaccinated, keep their jobs, and survive lockdowns, Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick was allegedly figuring out how to redirect relief money into her political war chest.
And yet, for some reason, you don’t hear the usual suspects on cable news shrieking about “protecting democracy” or “restoring trust in government.” Funny how quiet things get when the corruption isn’t wearing a red tie.
Now, if this were a Republican accused of stealing COVID money and faking tax returns to prop up a campaign, you’d be treated to round-the-clock coverage, complete with dramatic music, solemn panels, and a countdown clock to indictment. But when it’s a Democrat? Crickets — or, at best, a mumbled “this story is still developing” as they rush to the next anti-Trump segment.
To be clear, Cherfilus-McCormick hasn’t been convicted — yet. But if she is, she’s facing up to 53 years in prison. That’s not a minor ethics violation. That’s federal prison for more than half a century. It’s the kind of sentence you’d expect for a mob boss, not a sitting member of Congress — although at this point, is there really much of a difference?
