FEMA Officials Fired For Hidden Payments

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the termination of four Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employees following the unauthorized allocation of funds for housing migrants in New York City. A DHS spokesperson told Fox News that the individuals were dismissed for “circumventing leadership and unilaterally making the egregious payment for hotels for migrants.”

The decision to fire the employees follows recent scrutiny over FEMA’s financial allocations, particularly after entrepreneur Elon Musk brought attention to the issue. On Monday, Musk posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, claiming that “The DOGE team just discovered that FEMA sent $59M LAST WEEK to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants.” His post sparked widespread discussion, with many questioning the agency’s financial management.

DHS clarified that the individuals fired include FEMA’s Chief Financial Officer, two program analysts, and a grant specialist. “Under President Trump and Secretary Noem’s leadership, DHS will not sit idly and allow deep state activists to undermine the will and safety of the American people,” the agency stated. The department has indicated that further reviews of financial disbursements will be conducted to ensure compliance with federal directives.

Musk, who has been vocal about government spending, further criticized the agency’s handling of funds. “The money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high-end hotels for illegals!” he wrote. He also confirmed that efforts are underway to recover the funds, stating, “A clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds.”

During the Biden administration, FEMA faced controversy over the allocation of funds, particularly in cases where resources for disaster relief were reportedly insufficient. Critics pointed to instances where FEMA funding was directed to support migrants rather than being fully available for natural disaster victims. The issue resurfaced amid concerns that federal resources were being diverted from their intended purposes.

House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed the situation, noting that FEMA’s emergency relief funding operates separately from funds allocated to immigration-related assistance. However, he emphasized that the agency should not be involved in financing border-related matters. “FEMA should not be in the business of funding the border crisis,” Johnson stated.

FEMA collaborates with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to administer funds through the Shelter and Services Program (SSP), which provides housing and support for migrants released into the United States. A spokesperson for New York City Hall confirmed that the city received financial assistance from the federal government within the past week, funds that had been allocated under the previous administration for migrant aid.

According to City Hall, of the $59.3 million provided, approximately $19 million was specifically designated for hotel costs, while the remainder was used for services such as food and security. Officials also noted that the funds were not part of a disaster relief grant, addressing some concerns over potential misallocation of emergency resources.

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) weighed in on the issue during an appearance on “FOX & Friends,” describing the firings as “long overdue.” He claimed that financial mismanagement regarding these funds dates back to the Biden administration. “New York City—a sanctuary city—has been wasting billions of taxpayer dollars to provide free housing, clothing, food, education, and healthcare to illegal immigrants, including criminal aliens,” Lawler said. He also commended DHS for taking action, stating that “under President Trump’s leadership, we have to stop incentivizing sanctuary cities and states to continue these policies.”

DHS previously told Fox News Digital that those responsible for the payments would be held accountable, reinforcing the administration’s stance on strict oversight of federal funds.

President Donald Trump also addressed the controversy on his social media platform, Truth Social. In a post on Tuesday, Trump suggested that FEMA itself should be abolished. “FEMA spent tens of millions of dollars in Democrat areas, disobeying orders, but left the people of North Carolina high and dry. It is now under review and investigation,” he wrote.

He continued with further criticism, declaring, “THE BIDEN RUN FEMA HAS BEEN A DISASTER. FEMA SHOULD BE TERMINATED! IT HAS BEEN SLOW AND TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE. INDIVIDUAL STATES SHOULD HANDLE STORMS, ETC., AS THEY COME. BIG SAVINGS, FAR MORE EFFICIENT!!!”

As the situation develops, DHS has reiterated its commitment to enforcing accountability within FEMA and ensuring that federal funds are properly allocated. In the coming weeks, further reviews of the agency’s financial decisions are expected.
