Erika Kirk’s WHCD Nightmare

Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, was shaken and in tears as she was rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after gunfire erupted outside the ballroom Saturday night, according to an eyewitness account.

Witnesses said Kirk appeared overwhelmed as security moved her quickly through the Washington Hilton. At one point, she reportedly kept repeating that she just wanted to go home. The moment carried extra weight given her recent loss—her husband was killed just over six months ago during a speaking event at Utah Valley University.

The chaos unfolded shortly after the evening’s program began. Guests had barely settled in when shots rang out near a security checkpoint. Panic spread quickly through the crowded ballroom, where more than 2,000 attendees—including journalists, government officials, and high-profile guests—scrambled for cover. Some dove under tables as others tried to move toward exits.

Another dramatic scene involved Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was escorted out by his security team. An eyewitness described him as unsteady and disoriented as he was helped along, with aides supporting him on both sides as they moved him to safety.

The suspected gunman, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of California, allegedly forced his way toward the event armed with a shotgun and knives. Authorities say he fired multiple rounds before being stopped by Secret Service agents in the hotel lobby. One agent was shot at close range but survived, reportedly protected by a bulletproof vest.

The incident triggered an immediate and coordinated evacuation. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and several senior officials were quickly ushered out. The shooting happened roughly 20 minutes after the president arrived at the event, which he had not attended for years prior.

Law enforcement officials later said they believe the suspect had been staying at the hotel, which hosts the annual dinner for members of the press and political figures. He was taken into custody at the scene without further injuries reported among attendees.

Federal prosecutors have already filed initial charges, including assault on a federal officer and weapons-related offenses. Officials say additional charges are likely as the investigation continues. The suspect is expected to appear in federal court in Washington on Monday.

For many who were there, the night quickly shifted from a routine, high-profile gathering to something far more unsettling. For Erika Kirk in particular, the experience appeared to reopen very recent wounds, turning what was supposed to be a public appearance into another moment marked by fear and loss.
