Nearly a year after gunfire tore through a normally quiet Baldwin Park neighborhood, police have released body camera footage and audio that capture how quickly the situation spiraled out of control when officers arrived on scene.
The suspect, 22-year-old Eduardo Roberto Medina Berumen, is accused of killing Officer Samuel Riveros, 35, and Darius Wong, 43, a father of two. He faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder, and is expected in court Thursday.
The shooting happened on May 31, 2025, after officers responded to reports of gunfire on the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue. By the time police arrived, Wong had already been shot. He had been on his way to a housewarming party when he was killed.
According to the footage released by the Baldwin Park Police Department, the situation turned dangerous almost immediately. As the first officer pulled up, the suspect began firing. The officer returned fire and moved to help a colleague who had been injured by shattered glass when bullets struck a patrol car.
Moments later, Officer Riveros, a nine-year veteran of the department, arrived at the scene. Bodycam footage shows him moving through the area, warning nearby residents to get to safety. As he made his way along the sidewalk, he was shot.

Police Chief Robert Lopez said the gunman kept firing even after hitting Riveros, making it difficult for officers to reach both the wounded officer and Wong.
“After striking the officer, Berumen continued firing rounds at the other officers, preventing them from immediately pulling the wounded officer and the initial victim to safety for medical treatment,” Lopez said in a video released by the department.
Officers eventually managed to reach Riveros and rushed him to a hospital, but he did not survive.
The footage also shows that even after being struck by police gunfire, Berumen continued to pose a threat. He remained armed with a rifle as officers confronted him. Audio from the scene captures officers repeatedly shouting for him to drop the weapon.
