House Republicans, led by Reps. Andy Ogles (R-TN), Tom Tiffany (R-WI), and Scott Perry (R-PA) are taking action to prevent President Joe Biden from resettling Palestinians in American communities.
In a letter to House Appropriators, the GOP lawmakers are asking that a provision be included in the Fiscal Year 2025 spending bill that prohibits the use of funds to issue visas or grant parole to any Palestinian holding a passport issued by the Palestinian Authority.
The lawmakers assert that it is not America’s responsibility to absorb the rest of the world’s problems. They argue that it would make more sense for countries in the region to take in Palestinians in need and that the Biden administration should work with these allies to find a solution.
Rep. Andy Ogles stated, “The vast majority of Palestinian Arabs continue to support Hamas’ violence and hate our American way of life, so mindlessly allowing them into our nation is an unacceptable threat to national security.”
Likewise, Rep. Tom Tiffany echoed this sentiment, stating, “It isn’t America’s responsibility, or in America’s best interest, to let Joe Biden continue treating our country as a dumping ground for the rest of the world’s problems. Palestinians should be resettled in other countries in the region, not here.”
In addition, 35 Senate Republicans, led by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), have sent a letter to President Biden asking for more details about his plan to resettle Palestinians in the United States. The lawmakers are concerned about the national security risks of bringing in a population with a significant portion supporting the Hamas militants.
Last year, Reps. Ogles and Tiffany introduced the “GAZA Act,” which would ban the Biden administration from issuing visas to Palestinians.
According to Breitbart,
The Senators write to Biden:
Your administration’s reported plan to accept Gazan refugees poses a national security risk to the United States. With more than a third of Gazans supporting the Hamas militants, we are not confident that your administration can adequately vet this high-risk population for terrorist ties and sympathies before admitting them into the United States. [Emphasis added]
The Republicans are taking a firm stance against the Biden administration’s reported plan to resettle Palestinians in the United States, arguing that it poses a national security risk and is not in the best interest of the country. They are calling for the administration to work with allies in the region to find a more appropriate solution. It remains to be seen how the Biden administration will respond to these concerns and whether the Republican efforts to block the resettlement of Palestinians will be successful.
