Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman still has a “D” next to his name, but he has now made it clear that his loyalty to the party has limits.
During an appearance Wednesday at The Hill and NewsNation’s Nation Summit in Washington, D.C., Fetterman was asked what might persuade him to leave the Democratic Party. He said he has no current plans to change his affiliation, despite occasional speculation that his increasingly public disagreements with progressives could push him toward the Republican Party.
There is, however, one issue that Fetterman considers nonnegotiable: support for Israel.
“If our party ever becomes — and just makes it official — the anti-Israel party, that’s when I would leave because that’s been a moral clarity for me,” Fetterman said.
He delivered a similar message during an interview with Fox News, calling the possibility of an anti-Israel Democratic platform his “red line.”
Fetterman’s warning comes as the Democratic Party faces a widening internal dispute over Israel and American military assistance. That divide became especially visible during a recent House vote on an amendment introduced by Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky.
The amendment would have removed $3.3 billion in security assistance for Israel from a spending bill. It failed by a vote of 314 to 104, with 10 lawmakers voting present. Massie was the only Republican to support the proposal, while 103 Democrats voted in favor of cutting the aid. Another 98 Democrats opposed the amendment.

Although the measure was defeated comfortably, the Democratic vote appears to have reinforced Fetterman’s concerns about where his party is heading.
He has also pointed to the Senate race in Michigan, where Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has taken a sharply critical position toward the Israeli government. Fetterman argued that an El-Sayed victory could make the state more competitive and force Democrats to spend additional money defending the seat.
“What’s defined El-Sayed is the more anti-Israel and hostile-to-Israel thing,” Fetterman said.
During an April appearance on CNN’s “Inside Politics,” El-Sayed was asked about the morality of Hamas and the Israeli government. He described both as evil, arguing that the killing of large numbers of civilians should be condemned regardless of which side is responsible.
Fetterman has also directed his frustration toward Sen. Bernie Sanders over Sanders’ support for former Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. Platner suspended his campaign in July after facing serious sexual assault allegations, which he has denied.
“As a Democrat, I am angry at people like Bernie Sanders that pushed that accused rapist,” Fetterman said. “Why did so many people on that left embrace that accused rapist?”
Platner had already attracted controversy before the allegations emerged. He previously had a Totenkopf tattoo on his chest, a skull-and-crossbones symbol closely associated with Nazi Germany’s SS. Platner said he had not understood the symbol’s meaning when he got the tattoo and later had it covered.

Taken together, these disputes show how far Fetterman has moved from the progressive wing of his party, particularly on Israel and the candidates progressive leaders choose to support.
For now, Fetterman remains a Democrat and says he has no immediate intention of leaving. Still, his comments should not be dismissed as empty political theater. His support for Israel has remained consistent even as criticism of the Israeli government has grown among Democratic voters and lawmakers.
