Survey Results Offer Insight Into D.C. Crime Debate

Oh boy, here we go again. The Democrats are doing that thing they do—where they twist themselves into rhetorical pretzels to avoid agreeing with anything that might even vaguely reflect well on Donald Trump. This time, it’s about crime in Washington, D.C.—you know, the nation’s capital, where you can’t walk six blocks without hearing a siren or watching someone lock their car three times just to go buy coffee.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) decided to break the emergency glass—not for the crime wave, no no—but to tell us that there is no emergency. That’s right, while residents are watching carjackings spike and businesses shutter early out of fear, Democrats are busy giving public statements that essentially say, “Nothing to see here, folks.” Because admitting there’s a problem might mean Trump was… wait for it… right?

And let’s just pause on that for a second. Democrats are now on the record saying crime isn’t an emergency because Trump acknowledged it is. That’s the hill they’re dying on. “If Trump supports breathing, we’ll hold our breath.” It’s that level of political strategy.

But here’s where it gets even more delicious—MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough of all people, went rogue and admitted that even some Democrats and members of the media were privately cheering Trump’s action on D.C. crime. You know the situation must be bad when MSNBC stops pretending.

And the data? Oh, it’s brutal. Axios reporter Alex Thompson cited a May 2025 Washington Post poll showing that 50% of D.C. residents believe crime is a very serious or extremely serious problem. But wait—Democrats are claiming that’s a sign of progress. Because, last year, it was 65%.

Let’s spell that out: half the population is deeply concerned about crime, and the Democratic response is, “Hey, it used to be worse.” That’s like telling a burn victim, “You’re only 2nd-degree now, congratulations!”

Even the people on Thompson’s panel couldn’t help but laugh at that logic. They literally laughed. Because anyone with a political pulse knows—you don’t argue with 50% of your voters when they say something matters. You don’t try to convince the public that their personal safety concerns are just paranoia. Unless, of course, you’ve been living in a progressive think tank bubble for so long you’ve forgotten what real life is like.

So what’s Mayor Muriel Bowser doing? She’s smart enough to smell the political napalm in the air. Unlike the hill-climbing members of Congress, she knows going full anti-Trump on this issue might be political suicide. When half your city is screaming for help, “Well, Trump likes the idea” isn’t a valid reason to do nothing.

But sure, let’s keep pretending this isn’t a problem. Let’s ignore the D.C. police union, the business owners locking up by dusk, the residents who are terrified to walk their dogs at night. Let’s keep arguing semantics while real people live the consequences.

This is textbook 80/20 politics—the kind of issue where 80% of Americans agree crime is out of control and want something done, while Democrats manage to find the 20% fringe argument and camp out there with a flag and a bullhorn. That’s how you lose elections, folks. And judging by the Democrats’ approval ratings, that’s exactly what they’re gearing up to do.

Keep talking, Jamie. Every time Democrats try to argue crime isn’t that bad, the poll numbers beg to differ. And the louder they get, the worse they sound. So by all means—continue.
