A New Ship and a High Honor
President Donald Trump honored two fallen American heroes at the White House Ellipse. He announced the Coast Guard will commission a new ship named for firefighter Jeffrey Palazzo. The president also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Welles Crowther, who saved 18 lives that day. Trump stated the new vessel is a “fast response cutter, the most incredible kind of ship you’ll ever see.” He claimed the ship can handle waves five times bigger than its own size. The president noted he bought the ship himself and negotiated the price, calling it very expensive. This announcement comes as part of the 39th stop on his Steel Across America Tour.
Crowther, known as the “Man in the Red Bandana,” died in the South Tower lobby while saving others. Trump said Crowther “saved many, many people before losing his own life in the South Tower lobby when the building came down.” Crowther’s mother and sister accepted the medal on stage. Their family said the award means the world to them and will be treasured for generations.
The Steel Beam and the Prayer
The ceremony featured a massive 21-foot steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center’s South Tower. This beam weighs nearly 17,000 pounds and has traveled over 10,500 miles across the country. It is part of a tour by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the 25th anniversary of 9/11, per ABC News. The beam will move through New York on Friday to retrace the steps of fallen firefighter Stephen Siller.
FDNY Chaplain Msgr. Jamie J. Gigantiello led a prayer to bless the beam at the event. He asked for the steel to symbolize courage and hope for the future. Reports note that the FDNY lost 343 members on 9/11. More than 400 other members have since died from illnesses related to their work at the site, according to RedState.
Trump recalled his own experience that day when he sent crews to help at the site. He admitted there wasn’t too much they could do to stop the destruction. He described the scene as raw and said nobody had seen anything like it before. The president emphasized that America will fight, endure, and prevail against any threat.
Looking Ahead to Friday
Trump plans to attend another ceremony at the Pentagon on Friday to mark the anniversary. The tour continues to bring the memory of the attacks to communities across the nation. The president warned that the attacks divided time into what came before and what came after.
Trump paid particular tribute to the selfless actions of both Palazzo and Crowther. He called the Medal of Freedom the highest civilian honor the country can give. The Coast Guard will officially commission the new cutter this weekend in New York.
