A New Direction for the Count

The Trump administration proposed major changes to the decennial census. They want to drop questions about race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation from the form. This shift aims to return the survey to its original purpose. Currently, the objective is to tally only permanent residents and American citizens. This proposal marks a clear break from past census practices.

According to the Washington Times, the administration said these changes align the questionnaire with its founding goals. Just over a year after President Donald Trump commanded a new census design, the U.S. Census Bureau presented this proposal. The prior directive aimed to prevent illegal immigrants in the U.S. from appearing in the total count. A full census will be carried out by the bureau in 2030.

Who Gets Included in the Count

The proposed rule changes would exclude even more immigrants from the census. This covers individuals present in the U.S. under temporary lawful status. RedState reported that the plan would eliminate parts of the questionnaire seeking information on race or ethnicity. These specific questions have been included since the first census in 1790. The change would remove decades of data collection on these demographic groups.

Per RedState, the administration argues that the current questions do not match the census’s original intent. The original purpose focused on a “whole number of persons in each state.” This phrase appears in the historical context of the census. The new proposal seeks to narrow the scope of who is counted and what is asked. It represents a significant shift in how the government gathers population data.

What Happens Before 2030

The next full census is scheduled to take place in 2030. The proposed changes are part of the preparation for that major event. RedState noted that the bureau submitted the proposal following the President’s earlier directive. That directive asked the parent agency to craft a census that blocked illegal immigrants. The current plan goes further by also removing questions on race and sexual orientation.

According to the Washington Times, the administration believes these edits will bring the survey back in line with its roots. The removal of these questions affects how data on race and ethnicity is gathered. It also changes how the government views sexual orientation in its population counts. The proposal is now open for review and potential rule-making before the 2030 date arrives. Officials have not yet stated a final decision on these specific changes. The process will continue as the nation moves toward the next decade count.
