A security breach at NBC’s “Today” show studio disrupted the morning on Thursday after an unauthorized man entered a restricted area and approached anchor Craig Melvin.
According to TMZ, the intruder initially appeared to be looking for longtime weather anchor Al Roker. When he was unable to locate Roker, he reportedly encountered Melvin in an area that was not open to the public.
The man allegedly lunged toward Melvin while shouting a racial slur. The incident happened shortly before 9 a.m. and was not captured on camera.
Security personnel and staff quickly responded, restraining the man until police arrived. He was then taken into custody without further incident.
TMZ reported that the suspect was white, unarmed and carrying a backpack. No one was injured, and the incident was not mentioned by the hosts during the broadcast.
NBC News later confirmed that a security incident had occurred near Studio 1A, the Rockefeller Plaza space used by the “Today” show.
“An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A,” the network said in a statement. “The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security.”
NBC added that the man was detained and turned over to law enforcement. The network said there was no physical altercation and that no one suffered any injuries.

The company also said it was cooperating with investigators and reviewing its existing security procedures.
“NBC and ‘Today’ take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously,” the statement said. “We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.”
Although the situation ended without anyone being harmed, the breach reportedly unsettled employees who already had concerns about safety.
Page Six cited an unnamed source who said staff members were particularly shaken because the intruder had been able to enter a restricted area while carrying a backpack.
“He could have stabbed Craig. He could have planted a bomb,” the source said.
The source also said employees were already feeling uneasy because of a separate situation involving Savannah Guthrie’s family. That concern, combined with Thursday’s incident, reportedly heightened anxiety inside the studio.
Part of the challenge is the unusual layout of the “Today” show’s facilities. Studio 1A is located in a heavily traveled section of Rockefeller Plaza and is closely connected to public spaces.
The source described the studio as a difficult place to secure because of the constant movement of employees, guests, production crews and celebrity entourages. A coffee shop located near an employee entrance also contributes to the steady flow of people.
“People come in with entourages,” the source said, noting that celebrities sometimes arrive with large groups. As a result, it is not unusual for several people to pass through security at once.
The insider did not suggest that NBC executives were indifferent to employee safety. Instead, the source said the building’s public location and high level of activity make security more complicated than it would be at a closed production facility.
Still, the fact that an unauthorized person was able to reach Melvin will likely prompt serious internal discussions. Even though security responded quickly and the incident ended peacefully, staff members are expected to want answers about how the man entered the restricted area and what changes can be made to prevent another breach.
