The Interview Exchange

Tucker Carlson pressed former Conservative politician Jacob Rees-Mogg during a recent interview about World War II. Carlson asked why Britain should have entered the conflict in the first place. The decline of the British Empire and the ascent of the United States to dominant power status were cited by him. Carlson questioned if the UK is actually better off after defeating Nazi Germany.

Rees-Mogg pushed back hard against the host’s line of questioning. He argued that the victory preserved British sovereignty and stopped Hitler from expanding across Europe. “Our self-respect was hugely maintained by defeating the greatest evil the world has known,” Rees-Mogg said. He noted that the war prevented a darker fate for the region.

Carlson’s Historical Claims

The host claimed Hitler did not want war with the UK and had made deals with Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Carlson suggested the conventional story about the invasion of Poland might be wrong. When Rees-Mogg accused him of defending the Nazi leader, Carlson replied, “I’m actually not a secret Nazi.”I am an individual striving to think clearly regarding cause and effect, he added.

He focused on how the war led to India’s independence and reduced British global standing. The interview covered a wide range of historical topics beyond just the war itself.

Criticism From Senator Cruz

Senator Ted Cruz responded to the podcast host’s comments about the war. Cruz has previously called Carlson the “most vocal proponent” of antisemitism on the political Right. The Texas senator criticized Carlson for past interviews with Holocaust revisionist Darryl Cooper and white nationalist Nick Fuentes. Cruz stated that not challenging an individual who praised Adolf Hitler renders a person “complicit in that evil”.

Addressing the specific interview with Rees-Mogg, Cruz stated his view clearly. “Yes, Tucker, the U.K. is better off for winning WWII,” he said. Cruz added that America is also better off for the victory. He contended that the world would be far worse had the Nazis secured victory in the war. “This is not complicated,” Cruz told the host.

Context of the Controversy

Rees-Mogg told Carlson, “I’m very surprised you’re verging on defending Hitler” during their exchange. This comment came after Carlson questioned the legacy of the conflict and the benefits of the outcome. The Washington Examiner reported on the full range of the interview topics. The discussion highlighted deep divides over how to view historical events and their impact today.

Carlson has faced ongoing scrutiny for his views on Israel and antisemitism. The debate over the war’s outcome shows how hard some find it to accept traditional historical narratives. Rees-Mogg defended the decision to fight while Carlson sought to rethink the costs of that victory. The conversation ended without a clear agreement between the two men on the value of the past.
