The recent protests in Orsk, Russia may come as a surprise to some, as demonstrations in the country are not a common sight. However, the reason behind these protests is a devastating one that has affected the lives of thousands of people.

Last week, a dam collapsed causing severe flooding in the Orenburg region, near the border with Kazakhstan. The floods have forced over 4,000 people, including 885 children, to evacuate their homes.

The situation in Orenburg has been declared a federal emergency by the Russian government, and preparations for possible flooding are underway in three other regions. The damage from the floods is estimated at over 21 billion rubles, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The city of Orsk, which suffered the brunt of the floods, is now partially submerged, with water levels continuing to rise. Videos and images from the region show buildings and fields flooded, and people on the streets chanting for help from President Vladimir Putin.

In response to the protests, the governor of the Orenburg region has promised compensation payments of 10,000 rubles a month for six months to those forced out of their homes by the flood. However, the total damage from the floods is estimated at over 21 billion rubles, indicating that the compensation may not be enough to cover the losses and damages incurred by the affected individuals.

The cause of the dam collapse is suspected to be construction violations, and a criminal investigation has been launched to further investigate the matter. This incident highlights the importance of proper infrastructure and construction regulations to prevent such disasters.

In addition to the floods in Orenburg, another tragedy struck in the Smolensk region in western Russia. An overpass in the town of Vyazma collapsed, killing one person and injuring several others. This incident has also resulted in the disruption of train services and gas supplies to nearly 9,000 people.

The events in Orenburg and Smolensk serve as a reminder of the importance of proper infrastructure and emergency preparedness in preventing and mitigating the impact of natural disasters. As the situation in Orenburg continues to unfold, it is crucial for authorities to address the needs of the affected individuals and provide necessary assistance.
