A Pastor’s Call to Repentance
Adam Hamilton told his church in January 2020 that Kansans need to repent for eating beef. This Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate now faces intense scrutiny in a tight race against Sen. Roger Marshall. The former United Methodist pastor led the largest church of his denomination in the nation for years. He urged his congregation to change their behavior over their carbon footprints. Hamilton said, “That’s what repentance means — I saw things differently, it changed my heart, and it changed my behavior,” per the New York Post.
The sermon came at a time when the political landscape in Kansas was shifting. Fox News and the Cook Political Report moved the state from a “Likely R” rating to “Lean R.” This change has allowed Hamilton to gain ground in a state with a long history of voting Republican. Recent months have seen an unexpected tightening of the race between Hamilton and Marshall, according to The New York Post.
Cattle Versus People
Hamilton’s message clashes directly with the reality of life in Kansas. The Kansas Livestock Association notes the state is the nation’s third-largest producer of beef. There are more than 5.8 million heads of cattle in Kansas right now. The state population sits at roughly 2.9 million people. Cattle outnumber humans by a factor of two to one. Breitbart reported that Hamilton suggested cattle produce more carbon dioxide than other crops.
During the sermon, Hamilton argued that some foods we grow create more greenhouse gases. He stated, “Some of the things that we grow, because we like to eat them, like cattle, end up producing more carbon dioxide than other crops that we could grow, other forms of food that we could have,” Breitbart noted. He stated that this increases the quantity of greenhouse gases present in our world. The pastor even asked his listeners, “What would Jesus say about climate change?”
The Political Backlash
Senator Roger Marshall has used these comments to attack Hamilton’s fitness for office. Marshall told Fox News Digital that Hamilton’s views prove he is just like other liberal Democrats. The senator observed that Hamilton remarked Kansans must repent for consuming excessive beef. Marshall also claimed Hamilton has flip-flopped on the Farm Bill. He argued this stance is counter to the values of Kansans who rely on agriculture.
Marshall stated, “In a state with more cattle than people, Hamilton saying that Kansans need to repent for eating too much beef and flip-flopping on the Farm Bill proves he’d be just like every other liberal Democrat in the Senate,” the New York Post reported. This attack hits a nerve in a state where farming is a way of life. Voters are watching to see if they can trust a candidate who questions their livelihood.
This race is not just about politics; it is about who understands your daily life. A candidate who tells farmers to feel bad for feeding their families is out of touch. The numbers show that Kansas relies on beef production to support thousands of families. When a politician questions this, they question the heart of the community. I believe voters will reject anyone who asks them to apologize for their work.
The outcome of this election will depend on whether people believe Hamilton can represent them. His past words suggest a deep divide between his views and the values of the state. The New York Post reported that Sen. Marshall charged Hamilton’s sermons were “woke.” If Hamilton wins, it would mean a major shift for the region. But if he loses, it proves that common sense still wins in Kansas. The next steps in the campaign will show if this pastor can truly connect with the people he hopes to serve.
