After spending 18 months in the role, U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll tendered his resignation. The Associated Press noted the exit of the youngest-ever army secretary. No official reason was given for his decision to leave the role he held since February 2025.

The White House Response

White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly praised Driscoll in a statement seen by Breitbart. She said he was highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Strong Again.

Rep. Steve Womack, an Arkansas Republican and Army National Guard veteran, also spoke on X. He described Driscoll as “a transformative leader who brought common sense and discipline to the Department of the Army.” Womack noted he appreciated how engaged Driscoll was from mentoring cadets to leading the Army.

Reports of Internal Tensions

Other outlets point to friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as the cause. RedState noted that Driscoll was “telling close associates that he would like to resign effective Labor Day.” The New York Post — US News noted the resignation follows months of tension between the two men over the service’s direction.

The Daily Caller reported that Driscoll is the second top leader to depart. General Randy George, the former Army Chief of Staff, was ousted in April. Politico stated both men experienced friction with Hegseth on issues like officer purges and drone warfare.

Driscoll’s last day at the Pentagon could be as early as September 4. The Wall Street Journal first reported the details of his impending departure. Mike Obadal, the Under Secretary of the Army, is next in line to serve until the Senate confirms a new secretary.

Driscoll previously served as an officer in 2007 and deployed to Iraq in 2009. He remains a member of the Republican Party and ran for Congress in North Carolina in 2020. The White House and the Army have not yet confirmed a specific replacement date.
