Iowa School Official Faces Legal and Immigration Trouble

Well, buckle up, because this story is somehow both exactly what you’d expect and still totally unbelievable.

Let’s start with the part that’s almost too insane to be real: the superintendent — yes, the top official running Des Moines Public Schools — was not only in the country illegally, but apparently claimed to have six children with five different women, three of whom managed to pop out kids within a year of each other. Not judging, just… trying to keep up with the math. Ian Andre Roberts, the man at the center of this circus, has now been arrested by ICE after it was revealed that he’s been dodging a deportation order since May. May of 2024.

But wait — it gets better. This isn’t some ancient immigration mix-up from decades ago. Roberts came over on a student visa in 1999 and never left. Then, like clockwork, he applied to adjust his status later on, threw all his romantic escapades into the paperwork, and still got denied. Not a glitch in the system — he was denied. And yet, somehow, this guy not only stayed but climbed the ladder all the way to superintendent of an entire school district. If you’re wondering how that’s even possible, well… join the club.

And just in case you were hoping for some kind of redeeming twist — like maybe the guy was just quietly raising kids and trying to live an honest life? Nope. According to ICE, Roberts already had a prior weapons charge from 2020. And when the officers came to arrest him, he didn’t exactly cooperate. He fled. In his vehicle. Which was later found abandoned in the woods. This is a man who ran an entire school system.

When ICE finally caught up with him — with help from state police, because this wasn’t your average paperwork violation — he was armed with a loaded handgun, carrying three grand in cash, and just casually had a fixed-blade hunting knife on him. Totally normal superintendent stuff, right?

At this point, you might be asking the question that’s probably been screaming in the back of your head for the last two minutes: How in the world was this guy hired?

Des Moines Public Schools says they ran a background check. He filled out the standard I-9 employment eligibility form. And apparently, that was good enough. Nothing to see here. Meanwhile, the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners has now revoked his license — you know, after he was busted as an illegal immigrant with a gun and a deportation order.

To really twist the knife, here’s a fun quote from Sam Olson of ICE’s St. Paul Field Office:

“How this illegal alien was hired without work authorization, a final order of removal, and a prior weapons charge is beyond comprehension and should alarm the parents of that school district.”

“Beyond comprehension” is putting it mildly.

You’ve got a guy who’s been here illegally for over two decades, has a weapons charge, fled law enforcement, and was still allowed to run a school district. The same school district that tells parents, every day, that they’re focused on safety, equity, and transparency. And here we are — a man with no legal right to be in the country, raising other people’s kids, with access to their schools, data, and policies. Oh, and a loaded gun in his waistband.

And what’s the bigger question no one seems to be asking? How many more Ian Roberts are out there?

Because if this is who slipped through the cracks — with kids on record, denied immigration status, criminal charges, and a literal deportation order — then maybe, just maybe, the system isn’t “broken”… it’s wide open.

Still think “vetting” and “border security” are fringe talking points?

This isn’t just a failure of background checks. This is what happens when law enforcement is muzzled, immigration laws are ignored, and bureaucrats are more worried about checking DEI boxes than checking basic facts. This is who the Democrats are fighting for and want for illegal votes.

And guess who ends up paying the price?

Parents. Taxpayers. Students. You.
